Marvel’s Wolverine Is Getting Shredded Online — And Still Selling Like Adamantium

The timeline is the joke and the punchline at once.

Before launch, Marvel’s Wolverine got dunked as hand-holding cosplay — scent trails nicknamed “fart gas,” QTEs, yellow-paint energy. After launch (Sep 15, 2026), the dunks kept rolling. Then Alinea Analytics’ early sell-through estimates hit the timeline: roughly 1.9 million copies and about $130 million in revenue in three days, according to coverage of those figures in GamesRadar+ and Wccftech.

Label this hard: those are analyst estimates, not a Sony or Insomniac confirmation. Outlets including TBreak, IGN Nordic, and Beebom noted the same gap — no official units or revenue drop from PlayStation. Treat Alinea as a sales-vs-discourse signal, not a ledger stamp.

    What the estimates actually say

Per GamesRadar+’s write-up of Alinea / Rhys Elliott: Wolverine’s early PS5 haul (~$130M / ~1.9M) already clears Alinea’s read on Death Stranding 2’s entire PS5 lifetime (~$129M / ~1.8M). Elliott calls it the top-performing new PlayStation Studios PS5 title this year so far, already #6 YTD on PS5 top-grossing despite only a few days on the board — and still well behind Spider-Man 2’s three-day pace (~$250M in Alinea’s framing).

Wccftech’s packaging of the same analyst lane adds more texture: ~1M digital pre-orders in the estimate set, ~22.9% of revenue physical, US about half the player mix (~53%), with smaller UK/France/Canada slices. Again: Alinea methodology is opaque. Useful for “are people buying?” — useless as a press-release substitute.

The discourse track: Park, “fart gas,” and a hotfix that flinches

The social fight predates day-one. Skill Up’s hand-holding clip fed a Gene Park “fart gas” dunk (Sep 10), then rode through Kotaku / TheGamer / IGN coverage that separated Scent Trails from Navigation Assist and noted the gas can stick around even with some options off. Insomniac’s James Stevenson, via IGN Nordic reporting, framed scent as mutant senses — not a permanent yellow brick road.

Launch-week dunks stacked QTEs, linearity, and yellow-paint memes on top. Then the patch notes blinked.

According to Kotaku (Sep 19), hotfix v1.001.005 cut crash pain and reduced opacity on Scent Trails / Audio Sense, while Insomniac said it’s exploring a future toggle. (There’s a slight clock conflict with MP1st’s Sep 18 ~10:17pm stamp — we date the Kotaku report Sep 19 and treat the exact live minute as unsettled.) Player before/after clips (Radec via Kotaku; GameRoll via TheGamer) are the public proof-of-nerf, not official stills.

That’s the important read: Insomniac acknowledged the UX heat without rewriting the game into a walking sim. Discourse got a volume knob. The combat blockbuster stayed the combat blockbuster.

Scores in conflict — note both

GamesRadar+ / Wccftech Sep 18 snapshots put Metascore around 77 (earlier snapshots floated 78). User score ~6.4 in that GamesRadar+ window — and scores move. We’re not inventing tweet counts or locking a forever number.

On the praise side of the split: combat and performances still get love; GamesRadar+’s own review line — “never a bad experience, just an underwhelming one” — is the middle-finger-to-both-extremes quote. Elliott’s frame is blunter: the DiScOuRsE crowd is not the same population as the buyers (“passive mainstream” energy).

    Discourse ≠ flop

Three days is a sprint, not a career. The long-term tail is open. Alinea ≠ Sony. Metascore 77–78 is a range, not a moral judgment. Hotfix opacity is a concession, not a rewrite.

But if your feed only shows fart-gas memes, you’re watching a different movie than the one Alinea is scoring. Wolverine is getting shredded online — and, on the early estimate board, still selling like adamantium.

  • PHYSINT Switches Publishers: PlayStation Steps Away, Xbox Steps In — And Skarsgård Confirms It’s Still Moving

PHYSINT Switches Publishers: PlayStation Steps Away, Xbox Steps In — And Skarsgård Confirms It’s Still Moving

The statements don’t match the temperature — and that mismatch is the story.

Image: Xbox Wire — partnership still from the Sep 9, 2026 PHYSINT publish announcement.

On one side, PlayStation frames the PHYSINT split as a careful exit. On the other, Hideo Kojima describes an unexpected mid-June cancellation and a three-month scramble for a new partner. Xbox then lands as publisher. A week later, Kojima Productions confirms Bill Skarsgård in the lead — the clearest public signal yet that the project is still breathing.

Here’s the sequence, labeled for what is official and what is secondary reporting.

    Xbox is now the publisher

On September 9, Xbox Wire announced that Xbox and Kojima Productions are expanding their partnership to publish PHYSINT.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, via Xbox Wire: “Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX.”

Kojima, in the same Xbox Wire post: “This expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world.”

Xbox Wire also says the relationship will extend beyond games into film and television collaboration, without naming titles or timelines.

Kojima Productions backed that up the next day in its own post, “XBOX CONFIRMED AS NEW PARTNER FOR PHYSINT” (September 10), stressing a shared creative vision and the OD-to-PHYSINT expansion.

PlayStation’s tone: “step away,” relationship “remains strong”

PlayStation’s public line, as reported by outlets including Game Informer and Polygon, is cooler than a death notice and warmer than a feud.

Game Informer quotes PlayStation’s statement: after careful consideration, they made “the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project Physint,” while keeping “great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision,” insisting the relationship “remains strong,” and looking ahead to “continued close collaboration.”

That is the corporate register: difficult, respectful, ongoing friendship. It does not explain the business why.

Kojima’s account: unexpected cancel, three months searching

The Verge and Polygon report a sharper timeline from Kojima’s own statement: mid-June notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel PHYSINT; three months “searching tirelessly” for a new partner; Xbox as a partner with a “common vision for the future”; development continuing.

Polygon publishes a fuller version of that statement, including Kojima calling PHYSINT a “genre-defining action-espionage title” and asking fans to rest assured development is ongoing.

Put the two public stories side by side and you get the clash TopMid is here for: Sony sells a mutual step-away with a strong relationship; Kojima sells a surprise cancel and a rescue. Both can be true in a room and still feel like different movies to players reading the timeline.

Bloomberg’s “why” — secondary reporting only

A day later, Gematsu summarized a Bloomberg report by Jason Schreier (citing people familiar with the project): missed deadlines, budget concerns, profitability questions, reluctance to pour hundreds of millions into a title that would not stay exclusive, and claims that Death Stranding / Death Stranding 2 revenue did not meet expectations.

Label this clearly: that is Bloomberg reporting via Gematsu’s write-up — not an official Sony reason, not an Xbox Wire fact, not a Kojima Productions press line. Treat it as contested industry chatter until someone on the record owns it.

Xbox’s side of that Gematsu/Bloomberg piece includes a spokesperson line about betting on Kojima — again, attributed reporting, not a platform roadmap.

    Skarsgård: the project-progress signal

On September 17, Kojima Productions posted “BILL SKARSGÅRD CONFIRMED AS THE LEAD ROLE IN PHYSINT”, unveiling a new poster with Skarsgård and Charlee Fraser, and nodding again to Xbox as publishing partner alongside the OD collaboration.

Kojima, via that KP post: he’s “delighted” Skarsgård is the lead; costume fittings, scans, and camera tests earlier this year gave him “tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.”

Cast context from the same post: Skarsgård joins an ensemble previously revealed at KP’s 10th anniversary event, including Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. KP frames PHYSINT as its third original IP and “the culmination” of Kojima’s career as a game creator — with Xbox support called out explicitly.

Whatever you think about the Sony exit politics, a lead confirmation plus performance-capture language is not a shelved-project press release. It’s a studio saying the machine is still running.

What stays off the record (for now)

A few things are still fog — and we’re not going to invent them just to fill the space:

    • Platform exclusivity for PHYSINT
    • Game Pass plans
    • Release year / window
    • Decima status
    • Some tidy “everyone agrees” read of the Sony walk or the Xbox pickup

Creator-choice praise from Xbox is real and on the record. Sony’s walk is real and on the record. The funding/deadline story is labeled secondary reporting. Skarsgård is the progress beat.

Bottom line: PHYSINT’s publishing chair changed under two different public temperatures. Xbox owns the next chapter on paper. Skarsgård’s lead confirm is the clearest sign the chapter is still being written.

  • Global Grassroots Cup 2 Is Next — And It’s Really About Halo Fest Team Passes

Global Grassroots Cup 2 Is Next — And It’s Really About Halo Fest Team Passes

Halo Fest’s Infinite Open 4v4 isn’t a vibe check. It’s sixteen Team Passes, HCS points, and a short calendar that is already moving.

According to Halo Waypoint’s Esports at Halo Fest 2026 competition page, the events that count toward Infinite Open 4v4 Team Pass qualification include:

    • Global Grassroots Cup 1 — August 29–30
    • Global Grassroots Cup 2 — September 26–27
    • Global Grassroots Cup 3 — October 17–18
    • DreamHack Birmingham and DreamHack Atlanta (points decayed by 90%)

Waypoint is blunt about weight: those tournaments “include HCS points and will have heavy influence on your ability to qualify for the Open 4v4.” DreamHack points still matter for seeding math, but the decay is designed so recent Cups carry the real fight.

Cup 2 lands this coming weekend. That is not “someday in the fall.” That is seven days from a Saturday lobby.

    What Cup 2 actually is

European Halo League lists the weekend as EHL x LVT Global Grassroots Cup 2, dated 26 Sept – 27 Sept 2026, under the Halo Championship Series grassroots lane. EHL notes it is recognized as an HCS Grassroots Partner — community events aligned with official Halo Infinite esports standards.

What we are not going to do here: invent a prize pool, map pool, entry fee, or a fake shortlist of favorites. Public format and finance details for Cup 2 still aren’t locked in one place — and TopMid isn’t going to invent a prize pool just to sound sure. If you’re grinding points, treat the organizer page and @HCS as the live source of truth for registration and rules as they drop.

Why the points matter more than the weekend vibes

Halo Fest sold out before Team Pass details landed. Waypoint’s fix, detailed on the same competition page and earlier in the July open-competition update, is sixteen Team Passes aimed at the competitive community — not a backdoor GA ticket.

    The mechanics, per Waypoint:

    • Team Passes sell in November, roughly 4–6 weeks before Halo Fest
    • Teams register closer to the event; invitations to buy go in HCS points order
    • The roster you sign up with becomes your Halo Fest roster and locks once you purchase
    • A pass covers 4 players + 1 coach, full event access, and Open 4v4 entry
    • Passes are not transferable
    • Top 16 on the registration list get priority invites; registration alone does not guarantee a pass

The Open 4v4 itself is a 16-team bracket with a $20,000 prize pool, running Saturday, December 12, with Grand Finals on Sunday, December 13 — again per Waypoint.

So Cup 2 is not a standalone meme weekend. It is middle rung on the only recent-points ladder that Waypoint has publicly tied to those sixteen passes.

The coverage gap (and why we’re here)

A week out, the competitive story is oddly quiet in public channels. A week-out sweep of public channels found no major Cup 2 preview from other outlets and no usable fan quotes to hang a “community mood” lede on. That is not us claiming the scene is dead. It is us refusing to invent a consensus.

What does exist from the first Cup: EuropeanHalo’s Twitch VODs for Day 1 and Day 2 of EHL x LVT Global Grassroots Open/Cup #1. Those streams are the public tape. We are not publishing a Cup 1 winner, bracket story, or view-count flex here — those details stay out until they are verified for TopMid.

If you care about grassroots Infinite right now, the honest read is: the official path is clear; the secondary coverage layer is thin. That vacuum is exactly why a Cup 2 desk note matters.

    Calendar from here

    Event Dates
    Global Grassroots Cup 2 Sep 26–27, 2026
    Global Grassroots Cup 3 Oct 17–18, 2026
Team Pass sale window November 2026 (4–6 weeks before Fest)
Halo Fest Infinite Open 4v4 Dec 12–13, 2026

Miss Cup 2 and you still have Cup 3. Miss both and you are leaning on decayed DreamHack points plus whatever else HCS still counts — a worse spot when only sixteen passes exist.

    Sidebar: Team Pass registration (November)

When the FACEIT registration page opens (Waypoint says more info later; timing is 4–6 weeks before Fest), treat it like a roster decision, not a casual LFG. Waypoint’s rule is simple: the roster you register is the roster that locks with the pass. If your Cup grind is real, start aligning that five-person unit (4+coach) before November invites hit.

Bottom line: Cup 2 is the next scored weekend on the Halo Fest Open 4v4 Team Pass path. Official facts are on Waypoint and the EHL schedule page. Fan mood and Cup 2 bankroll details are not something we’re going to cosplay. Show up, bank the points, watch Cup 3, and treat November like the real gate.
