The statements don’t match the temperature — and that mismatch is the story.

On one side, PlayStation frames the PHYSINT split as a careful exit. On the other, Hideo Kojima describes an unexpected mid-June cancellation and a three-month scramble for a new partner. Xbox then lands as publisher. A week later, Kojima Productions confirms Bill Skarsgård in the lead — the clearest public signal yet that the project is still breathing.
Here’s the sequence, labeled for what is official and what is secondary reporting.
Xbox is now the publisher
On September 9, Xbox Wire announced that Xbox and Kojima Productions are expanding their partnership to publish PHYSINT.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, via Xbox Wire: “Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX.”
Kojima, in the same Xbox Wire post: “This expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world.”
Xbox Wire also says the relationship will extend beyond games into film and television collaboration, without naming titles or timelines.
Kojima Productions backed that up the next day in its own post, “XBOX CONFIRMED AS NEW PARTNER FOR PHYSINT” (September 10), stressing a shared creative vision and the OD-to-PHYSINT expansion.
PlayStation’s tone: “step away,” relationship “remains strong”
PlayStation’s public line, as reported by outlets including Game Informer and Polygon, is cooler than a death notice and warmer than a feud.
Game Informer quotes PlayStation’s statement: after careful consideration, they made “the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project Physint,” while keeping “great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision,” insisting the relationship “remains strong,” and looking ahead to “continued close collaboration.”
That is the corporate register: difficult, respectful, ongoing friendship. It does not explain the business why.
Kojima’s account: unexpected cancel, three months searching
The Verge and Polygon report a sharper timeline from Kojima’s own statement: mid-June notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel PHYSINT; three months “searching tirelessly” for a new partner; Xbox as a partner with a “common vision for the future”; development continuing.
Polygon publishes a fuller version of that statement, including Kojima calling PHYSINT a “genre-defining action-espionage title” and asking fans to rest assured development is ongoing.
Put the two public stories side by side and you get the clash TopMid is here for: Sony sells a mutual step-away with a strong relationship; Kojima sells a surprise cancel and a rescue. Both can be true in a room and still feel like different movies to players reading the timeline.
Bloomberg’s “why” — secondary reporting only
A day later, Gematsu summarized a Bloomberg report by Jason Schreier (citing people familiar with the project): missed deadlines, budget concerns, profitability questions, reluctance to pour hundreds of millions into a title that would not stay exclusive, and claims that Death Stranding / Death Stranding 2 revenue did not meet expectations.
Label this clearly: that is Bloomberg reporting via Gematsu’s write-up — not an official Sony reason, not an Xbox Wire fact, not a Kojima Productions press line. Treat it as contested industry chatter until someone on the record owns it.
Xbox’s side of that Gematsu/Bloomberg piece includes a spokesperson line about betting on Kojima — again, attributed reporting, not a platform roadmap.

Skarsgård: the project-progress signal
On September 17, Kojima Productions posted “BILL SKARSGÅRD CONFIRMED AS THE LEAD ROLE IN PHYSINT”, unveiling a new poster with Skarsgård and Charlee Fraser, and nodding again to Xbox as publishing partner alongside the OD collaboration.
Kojima, via that KP post: he’s “delighted” Skarsgård is the lead; costume fittings, scans, and camera tests earlier this year gave him “tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.”
Cast context from the same post: Skarsgård joins an ensemble previously revealed at KP’s 10th anniversary event, including Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. KP frames PHYSINT as its third original IP and “the culmination” of Kojima’s career as a game creator — with Xbox support called out explicitly.
Whatever you think about the Sony exit politics, a lead confirmation plus performance-capture language is not a shelved-project press release. It’s a studio saying the machine is still running.
What stays off the record (for now)
A few things are still fog — and we’re not going to invent them just to fill the space:
- Platform exclusivity for PHYSINT
- Game Pass plans
- Release year / window
- Decima status
- Some tidy “everyone agrees” read of the Sony walk or the Xbox pickup
Creator-choice praise from Xbox is real and on the record. Sony’s walk is real and on the record. The funding/deadline story is labeled secondary reporting. Skarsgård is the progress beat.
Bottom line: PHYSINT’s publishing chair changed under two different public temperatures. Xbox owns the next chapter on paper. Skarsgård’s lead confirm is the clearest sign the chapter is still being written.
